Presiding Officer statement on the passing of ANR Robinson

Tobago House of Assembly.
The Assembly Legislature/Secretariat joins with the rest of Tobago, Trinidad, the Caribbean and the world in expressing its condolences to the family of the late ANR Robinson: Tobagonian scholar, politician and international statesman. Mr. Robinson shall be remembered for many things. As we all know, he was the only Tobagonian to have held the positions of Chairman of the Tobago House of Assembly, Prime Minister, and President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Presiding Officer, Kelvin Charles said: “In addition to his work involving the establishment of the International Court of Justice, Mr. Robinson will probably be best remembered for his indefatigable efforts to bring justice and internal self-government to the people of Tobago. “

Mr Charles also added: ” Indeed, to quote from his seminal speech of 14 January, 1987, to the House of Representatives, on moving the motion for internal Self-Government for Tobago: “This is not secession, sedition or separation. It is rather a matter of historical justice. It is consistent with contemporary notions of human rights and it accords with realism”.

While he has passed on, his memories will remain in our hearts.
