Chief Secretary: Tobago’s security a priority

The safety and security of all residents of Tobago continues to be of paramount importance.

Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles said he has taken note of the shootings which took place early this morning, leaving one man dead and another fighting for his life at hospital. The shootings have been linked to an early morning robbery. The police are investigating the matter, and an update will be provided to the public once further information becomes available.

Charles said the Tobago House of Assembly is taking an active role in ensuring the necessary resources are in place to lead the fight against crime, and to keep our communities safe.

“Just yesterday we met with various heads of national security to discuss our current security efforts and assess the island’s security needs,” Charles said. “This is a clear signal of our intent to work closely with the protective services to ensure Tobagonians can continue to feel safe in their communities,” Charles said.

“We will continue our collaboration with the police and other protective agencies and provide the necessary support to ensure they can carry out their duties efficiently and effectively.”

In the meantime the Chief Secretary is calling on the public to play its part.

“You are critical to the success of any crime initiative. We must report what we know, see and hear to the police. You might possess a vital piece of information that could solve a crime, assist police in its investigations and help bring perpetrators to justice.”
