A beloved hub of community spirit has been restored to the people of Glamorgan and its surrounding areas. After an extended closure for a series of upgrades, the Glamorgan Multipurpose Facility was officially recommissioned during a special ceremony on Thursday, December 4th, 2025.
At the ceremony, Deputy Chief Secretary and Secretary of Health, Wellness and Social Protection Dr. Faith Brebnor shared sentiments of happiness and satisfaction. Noting that the occasion represents something much greater, Dr. Brebnor expressed, “This is more than just a ceremony. It is a moment of absolute pride, a moment of thanksgiving, a moment that reminds us that when we fight and persevere, we can accomplish great things. It also reminds us that we must always be people-centred. We stand here not just to recommission a building, but we stand here to think of all the possibilities that this structure brings with it.”
Meanwhile, Secretary Wane Clarke congratulated stakeholders on their enhanced facility, while commending residents for their patience. Secretary Clarke placed special emphasis on maximizing the use of the asset noting, “Across the island, we have been spending quite a bit to repair things that people have maliciously damaged. I don’t want the same for Glamorgan. I want you to use this for the purpose it was intended. Use it to bring the community together. Use it to enhance the good in the community. Use it for training. Use it for celebration. Use it for the greater good.” Secretary Clarke reiterated a call for constituents to take ownership of the property, treating it with care and respect.
Emphasizing the vital resource such facilities provide, Assistant Secretary Megan Morrison indicated, “This is a facility which not only carries historical significance, but deep emotional and cultural values for this community. Community Centres are more than just walls and rooves. They are safe spaces. They are incubators of ideas. They are the heartbeat of village life. This community centre has long stood as a place where children can learn, elders gather, youth develop their talent and families come together. Today we breathe new life into this space ensuring that it remains a pillar of unity and opportunity for years to come.”
Notably, President of the Glamorgan Village Council, Carl McEwen regaled the audience with the council’s humble beginnings. He detailed the long journey towards the establishment of a dedicated space for meetings and community events. This goal was eventually achieved through the efforts of long-standing members Ms. Beryl Thomas and Ms. Veronica Wolfe.
Mr. McEwen explained, “The journey was indeed long and as I stand to welcome you here, I am indeed happy and satisfied. I am thankful and our Village Council is eternally grateful. Trust me, we will use it to the best of our ability, alongside the persons in our community because it’s not for one and it’s not for a few, but for all.” Mr. McEwen joyfully indicated that a new leg of their journey has begun and the chapters would be written with optimism and the same determination that has brought them thus for.
The Glamaorgan Multipurpose Facility now boasts of a completely refreshed interior and exterior featuring: a new Aluzinc roof supported by a new frame, gypsum ceilings, LED lighting fixtures, air conditioning units, improved access for the differently-abled, a remodelled kitchen, modern doors and windows with burglar proofing, an upgraded electrical system, expanded water storage capabilities and the installation of non-skid porcelain tiles. The project was executed by Gustavus Hercules Transport, with several employment opportunities provided to residents of the Glamorgan/Belle Garden communities. These upgrades came at a cost of $3,299,169.58.
As stakeholders joined in solidarity to cut the symbolic ribbon and unveil the facility’s commemorative stone, they made a firm commitment to place engagement, collaboration, and empowerment in sharp focus, thereby cultivating a stronger, more cohesive community.
