Supporting Tobago’s Fishermen

The role of fishermen to our island is important. Fish is a vital source of food security, not only to the predators living in the ocean, but to those who consume it on land. Fish provides healthy protein and various nutrients beneficial to a healthy body.

Fishing is also a means of gainful employment, providing employment for persons, and contributing to the economic development of the society in which they live in. Fishermen are also a well-known part of the workforce in some villages, such as Charlotteville.

It is not just that fishermen are able to provide fish for consumption, the fishing industry also helps our ecosystem function and gives us access to other byproducts, such as fish oil.

The Business Development Unit, which falls under the purview of the Division of Finance, Trade and the Economy, is offering a new grant opportunity to Tobago’s fishermen.

The $25,000 grant is available to fishermen who need support with boat, engine repairs and navigational equipment. Whether it’s to get back on the water or strengthen one’s business, registered fishermen are being encouraged to apply. Persons interested must provide proof of vessel ownership and a repair assessment is required.
