Nine medals for Tobago’s Carifta athletes

Tobago’s athletes will return home a happy bunch this afternoon, sporting the precious metal they picked up at the just-concluded 44th Carifta Games in Basseterre, St Kitts.

The youngsters left the Kim Collins Stadium having contributed to nine of Trinidad and Tobago’s 22 medals at the Games, including Boys under-18 4×100 metres silver. Tobago accounted for three gold, four silver and two bronze medals, while T&T’s overall haul included six gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals.

A confident Andwuelle Wright leapt his way to long jump gold on Sunday, disrupting the sand at a wind-aided 7.44 metres in the Boys under-20 competition. Javelin thrower Tyriq Hosford, though, stole the spotlight with a Carifta record 70.73-metre throw of the javelin on his way to the top of the podium in the Boys under-18 category.

Akanni Hislop also sparkled over 200 metres, and streaked to gold with a very impressive personal best of 20.91 in the Boys Under-18 category.

Tobago got silver medals came from Asha James, also in the javelin throw—her 45.12-metre effort doing the trick in the Girls under-18 category—and Hislop in the coveted Boys under-18 100 metres sprint, who clocked 10.47 seconds. Hislop had medals piling up as he also help T&T finish second in the 4×100 relay. And Khamani Roberts’ 1.73-metres jump landed her high jump silver.

The other athletes to medal were Chelsea James (Girls under-20 shot put) and Vandell Joseph (Boys under-18 javelin). James launched the iron ball 14.73 metres, and Joseph’s best effort was a 61.67-metre throw.
