Improving Healthcare on the Island

Secretary of Health, Wellness and Family Development Dr. Agatha Carrington said the Division is focused on building its capacity in response to the healthcare needs of Tobago’s residents.

“In terms of building our capacity as we respond to the needs of our population. We are doing the cancer research, we are building the capacity of our professionals to treat with some care protocols and therefore, just last month we ensured that many of our professionals were exposed to care protocols and guidelines in a training workshop thereby providing them with the knowledge of dealing with cancer.”

During yesterday’s (December 19, 2018) post Executive Council media briefing at the Victor E Bruce Financial Complex, the Health Secretary said the Division has been collaborating with other stakeholders to improve healthcare on the island. In addition, the Division has also taken a close look at services provided by Tobago’s healthcare institutions.

“The Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA), which provides for us or acts on our behalf in terms of service deliverability, we felt it important that we engage them in a six-month review. So the board, this week we met with them looking at the past six months what has happened so that we can address any challenge that has arisen.”

She said following the session, the TRHA was able to determine successful areas as well as areas where additional work was needed. “The work continues so that they can improve [healthcare] services,” she said.
