The Tourism industry, as it is in many Caribbean countries, is the largest employer in Tobago absorbing 60% of the island's workforce. Business and leisure tourists flock to the island to enjoy its natural beauty and to invest in business opportunities.
The southwestern part of the island is rife with white sandy beaches, exotic coral reefs and large hotels and resorts. Ecotourism is extremely significant and much of it is focussed on the protected rainforest in the main ridge, the centre and north-eastern areas of Tobago .
Tobago has received the Best Eco-Tourist Destination in the World award in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The island has also won the best Caribbean Tourism Destination in 2004. In that same year (2004), the Blue Haven Hotel was awarded the Best Eco Resort and the Coco Reef Resort and Spa won the Best Luxury Resort.
While thousands of international tourists grace our shores, there is also a thriving domestic tourism market as hundreds of Trinidadians choose Tobago as their vacation destination, a haven for a weekend getaway.
The Crown Point International Airport and the Scarborough harbour, connect Tobago to the world. Inter-island travel between Trinidad and Tobago is made possible by daily domestic flights and the fast ferry service. European, North American and Caribbean tourists can travel to Tobago through direct international flights.
