‘Yorke’ On Target

The Dwight Yorke Stadium could be ready for “basic” use as early as next week.

This is the update provided by Secretary of Sport and Youth Affairs Jomo Pitt last week on the facility, which has been closed to competition for the past two years. He was speaking at Friday’s (January 4) post executive council media briefing.

“They have been targeting a date of January 14, which we were told by the track and field association that that should be the first event at the facility,” Pitt said. “So they are on target, so that by the next weekend, the facility should be available for use.”

The project is currently in Phase II of repairs. This phase includes the roof, plumbing works, electrical works, and air conditioning, and ensuring that the facility is occupational safety and health (OSH) compliant.

“The third phase is upcoming; that will include the field lights, the tower lights, and the sewer treatment plant, from what I understand,” Pitt added.

“But UDeCOTT is the project manager, and this still falls under the ambit of the Ministry of Sport, so I’d rather they give you timelines with regard to when they would address that….”
