Spotlight on Road Safety

Tobago observed UN Global Road Safety Week last week. The island used the occasion, which ran from May 6-12, to highlight some of the major road safety challenges faced here.

These include disregarding traffic lights and road signs, transporting passengers in the tray of vehicles, and failing to use seat belts.

The Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment used a creative video series to enhance awareness about the public role in, and the importance of, road safety.

Transportation planner in the Division, Nadia Frank-John, also used the occasion to reinforce these road safety concerns. She stressed the need for motorists to stop at the red light at the Bon Accord Government Primary School crossing zone.

“We urge you to continue to honour and acknowledge the road safety rules, [and] to honour and acknowledge the traffic light and the controls at each intersection,” she said.
