Protecting Tobago’s Coasts

Tobago is getting assistance from the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) to help manage the island’s coasts due to the challenges being posed by climate change. Recently, a coral bleaching alert was issued by the Institute.

“That alert indicated that the water around Tobago was expected to be above average sea temperature. This is the direct impact of climate change so what we are looking at is improving our relationship with the IMA,” Secretary of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment (DIQE), Kwesi Des Vignes, said.

He emphasized that Tobago must address the impact of climate change.

“The IMA has already agreed to provide technical support to DIQE to gather coastal and near shore data in the Milford Bay and Pigeon Point locality,” he said.

Des Vignes said the Division continues to be proactive on this issue.
