Chief Secretary: Met Office building vital to protecting Tobago

THA Chief Secretary Orville London is describing the new Meteorological Office Building in Crown Point, Tobago as “critical to the development and protection of the island, and its people”.

London made the statement yesterday (January 10) at the formal opening ceremony of the building, located at Cromstain Trace. The station is outfitted with conference facilities, a modern forecast office and smart technology. The function was hosted by the Office of the Prime Minister, Central Administrative Services.

London said natural disasters are common in the region, which makes such facilities vital in protecting the island.

“All of us in Tobago, all small islands, recognise how very vulnerable we are to natural disasters,” London. “And therefore anything that assists in ensuring we have timely warnings that will improve our disaster preparedness is something that has to be appreciated.”

London said to make the best of opportunities like these, “the attitude of the people to development” was important.

“It is only by doing that, that this $70 million investment will be worthwhile,” he added.

The new Met building, which is compliant with international standards, will also enhance Tobago’s efficiency in providing weather forecast updates to the public, and in particular visitors. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, who attended the opening, said the new building brings an added economic advantage.

“We are committed to making these kinds of investments in Tobago because the returns are going to be beneficial to Tobago and the national economy,” Rowley said.

The project was managed by the National Insurance Property Development Company Limited (NIPDEC). The main Meteorological and Forecast Office is located at Piarco Airport.
