Chief Secretary Disappointed As Sandals Withdraws

Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles is disappointed by Sandals decision to withdraw their plans to operate in Tobago.

The internationally-recognised resort chain announced yesterday they have pulled out of the proposed project due to the impact of the negativity and adverse media coverage on its international brand.

“This is a tremendous blow to our tourism thrust, which is one of the intended drivers of the Tobago economy,” Charles said.

He said the tourism industry is labour intensive, and that the Sandals project would have provided employment both directly and indirectly through other sectors such as agriculture, inclusive of agro-processing, services and even construction.

Charles added the brand’s presence on the island would have helped improve airlift to Tobago, as well as the island’s room stock.

The Chief Secretary said the Tobago House of Assembly remains committed to working with Central Government to attract tourism investment opportunities in Tobago.
