MISSION: To effect the sustainable management of all our natural resources, the skilled development of our human resources and increased use of relevant technology to facilitate trade and a dynamic agro-business sector.

This division can be subdivided into the Departments of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Fisheries and Natural Resources and Environment.

Agriculture Unit

This Unit promotes Agriculture as a viable business in order to increase the number of committed commercial agro-producers and improving agricultural production in Tobago through improvement of services and facilities extended to the farming community. In addition to these the department desires to formulate, design and implement a food security programme and to conserve agricultural lands where possible for agricultural purposes with the ultimate goal of developing specific, viable agro industries in Tobago.

Marine Resources and Fisheries Unit

This Department is responsible for the sustainable Management of Tobago’s Marine Resources from the coastline to a distance of 6 nautical miles off shore. This division is subdivided into the Fisheries and Aquaculture Unit and the Marine Area Unit.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Unit:
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Unit is responsible for the development and management of the fishing industry in Tobago. Its duties involve resolving conflicts in the Fishing Industry, training fishers, processors, vendors, and other stakeholders in the industry, in new equipment and techniques in fishing and fish marketing and safety measures and monitoring the fish resources surrounding the island.

Marine Areas Unit:
The Marine Areas Unit has responsibility for the marine and coastal resources around Tobago. Some of the duties include developing an integrated coastal zone management plan that would involve methods of including the community members in the management of the marine resources and researching ways and means of reducing pollution and the degradation of the reefs, mangroves, and sea grass beds.

The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment

This Department’s Mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Tobago’s environment and promote the sustainable use and management of our air, land, and water for the benefit of current and future generations

This Department is committed to protecting and preserving Tobago’s Natural resources and the Environment as well as its Biodiversity. This Department is also the arm of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) in Tobago monitoring and enforcing the laws pertaining to noise pollution, Certificate of Environmental clearance among others.

The Department is comprised:

Environmental Management
The Environmental Management Unit strives to reduce the pollution of our natural environment, to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems, to increase and improve public awareness of environmental issues and to protect and conserve the natural environment.

Watershed Management and Forest Industries
The Watershed Management and Forest Industries Unit strives to maximize the water storage potentials of watersheds, reduce soil erosion, maximize the use of non wood forest products and encourage the use of appropriate technology.

Wildlife Management
The goals of the Wildlife Management Unit are to conserve and protect the native flora and fauna, to reduce damage done to domestic agriculture by wildlife pest and to increase the availability of wild meat in the market place.

Parks and Protected Areas
The goals of the Parks and Protected Areas Unit include the protection of areas of significant biological diversity, the conservation of natural resources, to promote sustainable economic and human development through passive use of natural resources and the provision of recreational opportunities in the natural environment.
